soundslide

Script:

Who am I? What makes things real? How do I percieve the absolutes? Are there really absolutes? It seems what I once believed to be real is merely a glimpse of what is really happening. Simply put, reality is subjective to each person's interpretation of his or her surroundings. But what does that mean? How can we say that what we experience every day is not real? The fact is, our perceptions generate our reality. The lens one chooses to see the world through, becomes the reality to the person experiencing it. Quantum mechanics, the physics of possibilities, helps to explain this. Yet the more we explore this science the more mystifying it becomes. Have you ever wondered what thoughts are made of? Thoughts which are possibly more real than anything else. We have all been accustomed to believe that the external world is more real than the internal world--but Quantum Physics says the reverse. It says that what's happening inside us will create what's happening outside of us. So is everyone a mystery? They most definitely are! Asking these deeper questions opens up new ways of being in the world; it brings in a new way of thinking about things... it makes life more meaningful. The real trick to life is not to know all the answers, but to ask the right questions. For the past few years, Quantum physics has become my passion, but teaching me that the way in which I see the world has shaped the realities that I have experienced. If I have control over the way I think, then I become much more accountable for the things happening in my life. Quantum Physics has put the responsibility back in my lap. It has brought to life potential possibilities that I would not have even known existed.

Design Rationale:

When we were first assigned this final project, I immediately knew I wanted to do mine on Quantum Physics. Of all the things I have passion for in my life, Quantum Physics is something that I get very enthusiastic about. I wanted my soundslide to represent the mystical sense that Quatum Physics could have on people. I encorporated different pictures of certain key elements such as the human eye, optical illusions, the outter world, the inner world etc. I was looking to make my words come alive with pictures that represented what I was talking about.

I struggled with figuring out which pictures I wanted to use. I started out with over twenty different pictures I wanted to include. I had to narrow it down and use less pictures because it was making me dizzy watching the pictures go by so fast. I narrowed it down and made it go slower. I think it was the best decision I made.

I am most proud of the way the music part ends in the slide. I did not realize when I first downloaded the background music that it ended so intensely. It made me laugh when I first heard it all the way through because it is very emotional with the music and the words I was saying.

If I had more time I would have taken my own pictures and made my own creation out of them.

Bibi card

This project was to recreate a blow out card that we had assigned to us in class. My Blow out card was for the Rhode Island Monthy subscription. At first I did not think I knew enough about the program to recreate such a complex mail in card. I started off by measuring every angle and space between each line, but I measured in cm so I had to convert everything into inches in order to use the measurements on quark express. After I finished the entire thing I realized that it was way too big and took up an entire page, despite the fact that it looked pretty small on the screen. I had to resize it to look like the real blow in card, but the program wouldn't let me make it as small as I needed it to be. I had to open up a new document on quark and drag in everything I had done and make it smaller, piece by piece.

I struggled with making the small barcode at the lower right corner of the back of the card. It was extremely difficult to line them up and space them apart in the right way. I spent more time trying to get that part right than any other part of the card.

I am most proud of the front of the card because it took me so long and so many attempts before I got it right. I tend to be a perfectionist with things, and I wanted to get my card to look exactly alike the original. I struggled a lot with matching the font exactly. I am most proud of the way the whole thing came out.

If I had more time I would have definitely spent more time fixing the bar code at the right lower corner of the back of the card. I would have tried to fix the lines to make them exactly like the original.

brochure

For this project, I wanted to balance the amount of text with pictures. It was hard, since the business I did was the shade business, and there is a lot of information people need in order to pick out the right shade for them. I used a specific shade series called "Double Honeycomb shades" and picked out the pictures necessary in order to appropriately explain the features of the shade. I also included a tear out discount mail in form, which could be used as a promotion tool.
I found it really difficult in the beginning, when trying to determine what to include on the brochure. At first I was planning on advertising the company "North Solar Screen" but there was too much I would have needed to include that it would have been too much. I decided to narrow it down and get really specific. I had trouble get a background picture that was appropriate.
I am most proud of the back side and the tear out advertisement I created. At first I did not know how I was going to get the font to go vertically on quark express. I finally figured it out through trial and error and I was proud of the overall image of the brochure.

Website

For this project I was hoping to make a realistic looking web site that got straight to the point of what the business is all about. I made four pages, including a home page, an about us page, contact us, and a products page. They all shared the same basic idea including the top margin
which stated the name of the business.

At first I struggled with what I wanted my web site to look like. I had extremely colorful background at first, I realized it was too much and it took away from the writing of the products. There was too much going on, on the page. I decided to have a plain white background but added different pictures and a bright blue slogan.

I am most proud of the realistic qualitity that my website came looking like. I feel like it looks pretty professional and has all of the necessary information to be considered a real website. I am also proud of the credit logo and facebook invitation that I was able to recreate in my website. I feel that this gives more of an
authentic look.

If I had more time I would have added more pages and more links because I really enjoyed making this website. On my homepage I added a lot of links that would give out more information and I enjoyed the process.

Power Point Presentation

For this presentation I was hoping to give my audience an introduction to John Mayer by making sure, first and foremost, that it was aesthetically pleasing in terms of pictures and organization. Although the layout was pretty much given to us by the specifications of the assignment, I spent a lot of time searching through google images of pictures that I felt would be the best representation of John Mayer. I thought the first slide would be best presented
with a picture taking up the entire slide. The picture I chose was a little dark and eerie looking, which I felt would be a perfect introduction to a side of john mayer people might not know about, and would be interesting to learn about.

I didn't find many things in this particular aspect of the project challenging. Although I had never made a comparison table on a Power Point presentation before, I found it helpful and interesting to figure out how to create my own.

At first, I struggled with finding the right
font to use for the title of the presentation. I looked online for free font which seemed to have more variety, but they all seemed similar to eachother and nothing stuck out to me as being the right font that I had been looking for. I finally settled on a font from the power point called impact and a cursive-like font for the title of my presentation. I felt these two fonts would bring attention to the contrast and balance of the writing with the picture.

I am most proud of the way the first three slides complement each other, in terms of pictures and graphics, I spent a lot of time trying to find a template that would fit into the theme of telling a story. The scrap book idea gave the impression of a life story which is what I wanted all along.

Poster

For this poster I wanted to capture John Mayer in all his different styles of music. I found four pictures that seemed to demonstrate the many sides of him and used photoshop to blend them all together. I was able to use what I learned from the previous project to make this poster. I used the layer tools and I played around with the hue/saturation tool to make the pictures less bright so that the text would still stick out and catch the audience's attention.

I started off with a semi boring poster that I made with the basics from quark express. I had a regular pink background and two pictures of john mayer and blue text. I was not proud of the first one because it was so basic and I felt didn't catch the attention of the audience I would want to take notice. I decided to add the yellow star with the message "free for students" because I thought it would catch students attention especially because John Mayer tends to appeal to a younger crowd.

I had trouble with using quark express a lot in the beginning of this project. I had never used it before and I wasn't sure how many effects I could do to make my poster look really unique. I decided to use photoshop for the background and that made all the difference.

I am most proud of the background I made on photoshop. I feel that my final draft is significantly different from the first few drafts I made in the beginning of the project. This shows the amount of work and metamorphous the poster went through before it got where it is now.

For the sound slide I decided to use the song "clarity" by John Mayer. Since the song has many different parts to it I wanted to capture every different part and have it flow into the next part. Although I had a lot of trouble making the transitions smooth.

when I opened up the program audacity I could not for the life of me figure out how to cut out just the right part without it sounding odd when it transitioned to the next part of the song. My computer would only let me delete and past together sometimes, so I kept having to resave and open up the program again and it would work. I was getting very frustrated and even tried moving computers to see if it was just the computer I had been using that was flawed. It was still giving me trouble but I made it work and I finally had gathered a minutes worth of the song that I felt had captured all the parts of the song. I saved it as a wav file and could not figure out how to open it using the sound slide program. I was in the computer lab with 9 other kids who couldn't figure it out either. Thats when I realized I had to open it from itunes and convert it to an MP3 file from there and then open it up through the soundslide. I was relieved to have it completed.

I am proud of the fact that I completed this project, and that I learned the basics of creating a sample of a song through the program audacity. I believe this will be helpful in the future and I could do a better job the next time.

animation

I wanted to accomplish a successful animation, that evoked emotion and made people smile.

At first I had no idea how to add slides, nonetheless how to make all the words come up in an animation form. That is when I realized I had to click on the layer box and when the eye ball showed up, they would appear in all the boxes. I also had a lot of trouble figuring out how to save the animation. I saved it for web and devices and it wouldn't play back when I opened up the file from my private space. I realized when I opened it from safari it played just fine. I was relieved.

I am really proud that I figured out how to make an animation. It felt really good to create something that played on its own.

If I had more time I would have made smoother transitions between the lines of the poem appearing.

postcard

I was trying to achieve the aspect of an open road, blending a lot of different activities together. I put 8 different pictures together, all having a big road in front of them in common. I also put a picture from inside a car to symbolize the different perceptions and positions one could take while looking at this picture. Nothing is as it seems in this picture, if each picture was separated, it would be a totally different image and a distinctive difference in scenery. I wanted to blend each picture together to give a common purpose.

I had a lot of trouble figuring out how to blend each picture so that the images were clearly defined. I didn't want to put too much in the picture and create a clutter of different things going on. I had to play around with the different layers and make sure I could synchronize the pictures to make it look realistic and clear.

I am proud of my image because I think it blends well, and I did a good job switching up the hue/saturation and giving off a euphoric sense of nature. I am proud of the way it looks, the motor cycler's coming towards the man in the open road is an interesting optical illusion.

If I had more time I would have continued to play around with the placing of the different pictures. I would have added some more effects and tried to match up the car scene with what is going on around it.

Font Poem

For me, picking out the quote to put in the font poem was a tough decision. I chose two other quotes before settling on a line from a song called ‘We Belong Together’ by Irving Caesar. The line, “ we belong together, like birds on a feather, together we fly” was stuck in my head after watching the Movie Grey Gardens where the song was sang several times. I was trying to illustrate, through different fonts and different effects I discovered in photoshop, the emotional aspect of the words in the quote. The words that jumped out at me, I tried to make them jump out on the page by using bolder fonts and effects. The words that really stuck out to me were "together," "Birds," "feather," and "fly".

The major thing I struggled with during this project was figuring out how to lay out the page in an artistic way to create a fitting design for the lyrics that would stand out. I played around with the fonts and changed the word, "together," to make the letters actually closer together with a bold and sharp edge to it. I had trouble picking out which kinds of fonts to pick for the specific words because at first I made every single word a different style and it took away from the quote and looked to chaotic. I decided to stick with a balance of similar styles that would compliment each other.

Since I am not familiar with photoshop, every part of this assignment was new for me. I learned a lot about photoshop during this project, such as how to warp text, change background colors, and merge layers. I had a lot of fun being creative, I even accidently discovered how to paint butterflies on the background of my poem. This added a lot to the poem because the song is about flying away. This was by far the most enjoyable part of the project for me.

If I had more time I would have definitely tried to add more effects to my font poem. I would have inverted the colors to make it black on white to give the poem more depth and possibly even made it more colorful. Although I came into this project with no clue of the possibilities of photoshop, I am most proud that I was able to figure it out for myself and create a creative piece of art.

Contact sheet

Contact Sheet

Since I have never had the opportunity to work with Mac computers, I found the this first project to be extremely challenging. Changing the number of pixels in the first row was easy for me to figure out, although I had a lot of trouble when it came down to the duotone. When I saved the picture to the computer, and was trying to paste it in my contact sheet, the computer didn’t recognize the image and it wouldn’t let me put the picture in. I tried to resave the image and change the colors of the duotone, and no matter what I did it wouldn’t recognize the image and let me paste it. I struggled with this for a while, and then tried saving it as a JEG file and it finally worked.

Everything about this project was new for me. I had never worked in photoshop before so figuring out how to use the tools and changing the pixels of a picture was something new for me. I found it very interesting that you can get a close up of a picture from another regular picture by pressing the apple button and the plus or minus sign. I played around with the dark stroke, artistic-ink outlines, and journalistic. These were all new for me and the whole experience was very helpful and it was a great introduction to photoshop

I enjoyed the purpose section where we could play around with different effects and be creative with photoshop. I spent a half hour messing around with the different techniques such as accented Edges and made a simple picture of a butterfly and a flower look really edgy and different. I liked being able to have creative freedom and designing my own pictures.

I am most proud of the abstract section of the contact sheet. I found a picture of a lady wearing a beautiful gold dress and a magnificent golden crown with a flower on it, I really like the way that it turned out when I zoomed into the crown and slowly came out to the whole picture.

If I had more time I would have changed the close up picture that I used of the roller blader. I am not particularly proud of this section because it is a picture taken from behind and it doesn't give a good example of a close up shot of something. If I had more time I would have tried to find a better picture, I believe it could have come out better if I had done that.
